Snoopy
hitches a ride:
Our beagle also demonstrated his unique personality from the beginning! The little dog was wandering along a lonely rural road when we found him one cold February evening. Bill and I were in separate cars driving home from our mechanic's garage when I spotted the pup limping along the road. It was pretty dark is that area and I was afraid that Bill might not see the little guy. |
| I slowed to a crawl and tapped my brake lights several times in warning. When Bill saw the dog he stopped and so I did too. I don't know what was wrong with me that night because normally I would not just go on past an animal that looked lost and alone, but there were some nearby houses and it didn't seem so strange to see a dog wandering loose in that area. I'm so glad that Bill had the sense to stop! When I approached, the dog was friendly but timid. He looked so small and I noticed that he had one blue eye. I thought that perhaps he was partially blind. I lifted him into my car and he willingly cooperated, so we continued toward home. In the confines of a closed and warmed vehicle in the winter, it didn't take long for me to smell a strong aroma of manure, which he apparently had been rolling
in at some point during the day! |
| At home, the first order of business was to put Ben and Ollie outside so that we could bring the beagle in and down into the basement for a bath in the laundry sink. He was very good while I bathed him, even though I found he didn't like water too much. I was talking the entire time, trying to reassure and calm him, and by the time that I was finished toweling him dry we had bonded forever! Next: Mr. Hungry! |
