 DEPTH OF FIELD:
3. Another cause for poor focus is focusing in the wrong spot when composing your picture. Camera lenses usually indicate an area in the lens that is the most sharply focused with a rectangle or brackets displayed in the viewfinder. If your camera focuses automatically, there is generally a way to control the area of sharpest focus. Check your own manual, but most cameras can lock in the focus by aiming directly at the area you want most sharp, pressing the shutter release button halfway in, and keeping it pressed while you reframe. Then you can press the button in completely to take the shot.

*If the animal is close and relatively still, focus on the eyes.
*If the animal is in motion, focus on a spot that you think will be part of its path. This, too, can be frustrating at first, but don't give up: you'll get the hang of it before too long!
More Details: What IS depth-of-field? This refers to the focus from foreground to background within the 3-dimensional space that you are actually portraying in your shot. This is a complicated topic, because depth-of-field is controlled by the lens opening (aperture) AND by how close you are to the subject. If the lens opening is large, (which is necessary for low light or faster shutter speeds) the depth-of-field is shallow. As you get closer to your subject, the depth-of-field is also more shallow. In the shot above, Muffin's eyes and muzzle are sharp, but the top of her head is soft-focus because I am very close AND the light was low. In this case, the shallow depth-of-field worked out well because most of her face is sharp, and the busy background is less distracting. If you're using a digital camera, you can make as many "boo boos" as you like because you can always delete! Next
